Yoko Ono – Smiles Film

For Yoko Ono’s Into the Light exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, we created a smile-recognition photo booth, content-management system and moderation workflow for publishing audience portraits.

The booth captured an image only when it detected a smile. Photographs were uploaded to a cloud server for review, then approved images were shared on social media and returned to the gallery on a large display. Over three months, the installation collected and shared 20,000 smiles, extending the participatory artwork beyond the physical exhibition space.
